New · On-Call Roster

An emergency at 2am reaches somebody.

Your agent answers, works out whether it is genuinely urgent, and hands the job to whoever is actually on call tonight. It notifies them, texts them, then rings them and reads the job out. Nobody answers, it moves to the next person on your list. Somebody accepts, everyone else is stood down.

$19.95 a month, and it needs an incoming Talkify agent to answer the calls. Texts 10c and calls 50c a minute, only when somebody is actually being chased.

The call got answered. Nobody got told.

Most after-hours setups end at the message. The call is answered, the details are taken, an email goes somewhere, and then it sits there until somebody happens to look at their phone. Meanwhile the customer is standing in an inch of water deciding whether to ring the next plumber on Google. The gap is never the answering. It is the handover.

It knows who is on tonight.

From the moment the phone is picked up. The agent can tell the caller that Dave is on call and will ring them back, instead of promising something vague that nobody has agreed to.

It keeps going until someone answers.

A notification, then a text, then a phone call that reads the job out and takes a spoken yes. Still nothing, and it moves to the next person on your list, in the order you put them in.

One job, one person.

The first to accept gets it, and everyone else is told it has been taken. Two people never drive to the same address at 2am.

Quiet jobs stay quiet.

Anything the agent is not sure about is treated as next business day and waits for the morning. Waking a plumber for a quote request is how a roster gets switched off.

Every attempt on the record.

Who was notified, texted and rung, when, and what came back. "Nobody told me" is a conversation you only have to have once.

How it works

Answer. Judge. Chase.

  • Your agent answers and finds out what happened. The same agent you already have. It gets the problem in the caller's own words, a number to ring back on and the address of the job.
  • It decides whether this is genuinely an emergency. Using your rules, not ours. Anything it is unsure about waits for the morning, and the caller is told the truth about which it was.
  • Whoever is on call gets chased until they answer. Notification, text, then a phone call. Nobody answers in the time you set, and the next person on your list is up.
  • Somebody accepts and everyone else stands down. By tapping the link, replying YES, or saying yes on the call. The job is on their phone with the address and the number to ring.
Escalation After hours
  1. 0:00 Dave on call Notify, text
  2. 2:00 Sam next on the list Notify, text, call
  3. 4:00 Miriama owner Text, call, email
  4. 2:16 Dave accepted by text Others stood down

You set how long each person gets. Two minutes by default, and it stops the second somebody says yes.

Keep the roster however you already keep it.

Nobody is going to maintain a second copy of their on-call roster, so there are three ways to do it and all of them are fine. Whichever you pick, swaps and cover take one tap and the person covering never has to ask somebody else to edit a schedule.

Build it in Talkify

The weekly pattern, once. Dave has Tuesday nights from five until eight the next morning, Sam has Thursdays, and they swap weekends every second week. Drag your people into the order they should be tried and that order is the escalation.

Read it from your calendar

Already keep an on-call calendar in Google or Outlook? Point us at it. Any event titled "On call: Dave" becomes a shift. We only ever read it, and we never write anything into your calendar.

Or just flip a switch

Plenty of businesses do not have a roster at all: whoever is on duty this week says so. That is a perfectly good way to run it. Turning yourself on beats the schedule and anything else, which is exactly what you want at six o'clock on a Friday.

Worth knowing

A phone on silent is still a phone on silent.

This is the part most on-call products are quiet about, so here is the honest version. A notification cannot make a muted phone ring, on any platform, no matter what it claims. That is why the ladder ends with an actual phone call: a real incoming call is the one thing every handset still treats as important, and it works whether or not anyone has installed our app.

We are building a proper alarm-style alert into the Talkify app so it sounds through silent the way an alarm clock does. Until that ships, the call is the thing that wakes people, and it is in the default ladder for exactly that reason.

For the businesses where after hours is not optional.

Plumbers, electricians, gasfitters

Burst pipes, no power, no hot water and a gas smell do not keep office hours. The agent gets the address and the fault in the customer's own words, then wakes the right person and nobody else.

Property managers and body corporates

A tenant flooding a bathroom at midnight needs somebody who can actually act, not an inbox. The job goes to whoever is covering that portfolio tonight, and there is a record of exactly when it was passed on.

IT, security, refrigeration, facilities

Anywhere a service level agreement puts a clock on your response. Every attempt is timestamped, so how quickly somebody was reached is a matter of record rather than of memory.

Pricing

$19.95 a month, on top of your agent.

No setup fee, no per-job charge and no lock in. Notifications and emails are free. The only usage charges are the texts and calls we make chasing your on-call people, at 10c a text and 50c a minute, so a quiet month costs the monthly fee and nothing else.

  • As many people on the roster as you like
  • Weekly roster, calendar or a switch
  • Every attempt recorded
  • Cap the calls per job

The on-call roster needs an incoming Talkify agent to answer the calls: it has nothing to pass on without one. Business agents are $129/month at the founding rate for your first 3 months, then $199, including 100 minutes of calls.

Frequently asked.

Nine of the questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, ring our live demo agent on 03 242 1183, it'll either answer or queue a callback from a human.

What actually happens when someone rings at 2am?
Your agent answers in a real NZ voice, finds out what has happened, and decides whether it is genuinely an emergency using the rules you set. If it is, it takes the caller's name, a number to ring back on and the site address, tells them the on-call person has been alerted, and hands the job straight over. Whoever is on call gets a notification, a text and, if they still have not answered, a phone call that reads the job out. If it is not an emergency, nobody is woken and the job is waiting on your dashboard in the morning.
How does it know who is on call tonight?
However you already work it out. Build the weekly roster in Talkify (Dave has Tuesday nights, Sam has Thursdays, they swap weekends fortnightly), or point us at an on-call calendar you already keep and we read the shifts from it. If you would rather not maintain a roster at all, whoever is on duty simply switches themselves on and that beats everything else. Swaps and cover are one row, and the person covering does not need anyone to go and edit a schedule.
What if the person on call does not answer?
It moves to the next person on your list, in the order you dragged them into. You decide how long each person gets before that happens: two minutes is the default, and a burst pipe rarely waits well beyond that. If the whole list has been through without an answer, the last resort number gets rung and the job is flagged on your dashboard as unanswered so it cannot quietly disappear.
How do they accept a job?
Whichever way is easiest at the time. Tap the link in the text, reply YES to it, or just say yes when we ring. The first person to accept gets it and everyone else is told somebody has taken it, so two people never turn up to the same job. If they cannot take it, one tap passes it straight on rather than making the next person wait out the timer.
Can it tell a real emergency from someone who can wait until Monday?
That is the part we have been most careful about, because waking somebody for a job that could have waited is how a roster gets switched off. You describe what counts as an emergency in your business, and the agent is instructed to treat anything it is unsure about as next business day rather than guess. Those jobs are still taken in full and waiting for you in the morning, they just do not wake anyone.
Somebody accepted the job and then went back to sleep. Then what?
Accepting is not the same as doing it, so the clock keeps running. If nobody has marked the job dealt with within the time you set, it goes back out to the roster. The customer is still waiting either way, which is the only fact that matters at that hour.
We get the same caller ringing back twice. Does that wake someone twice?
No. A second call from the same number inside your chosen window joins the job that already exists rather than raising a new one. Somebody ringing back because they forgot to mention the water is coming through the ceiling is one job, not two.
Will it hand out my on-call person's mobile number?
Never. The agent is told the first name of whoever is on call, so it can say "Dave is on call tonight and he will ring you back", and nothing else. The number stays on our side and is only ever used to reach them. Give an agent a phone number and a determined caller will eventually talk it out of it.
What does it cost?
$19.95 a month on top of your Talkify agent. You do need an incoming agent for this: the roster has nothing to pass on until something answers your phone, so it is an add-on rather than a product on its own. Notifications and emails are free. Texts to your on-call people are 10c each and calls to them are 50c a minute, so a quiet month costs the monthly fee and a busy one costs what it actually used. You can cap how many calls we will make chasing a single job.
Can I prove somebody was actually alerted?
Yes, and this is the reason it is worth having in writing. Every notification, text, call and email is recorded against the job with the time it went, who it went to and what came back, including the ones that failed to send. "Nobody rang me" has an answer.
