Is an AI receptionist worth it for a New Zealand business?

The honest maths: what missed calls cost, what the service costs, when one saved job pays the month, and the cases where you should not buy one at all.

A New Zealand tradie at his kitchen table at night thinking over a spread of invoices, with a phone standing upright in front of him showing the Talkify logo on a blue to green gradient screen.

Short answer: an AI receptionist is worth it for a New Zealand business the moment missed calls cost you more per month than the service does, and for most trades, clinics and salons that line is crossed by a single missed job. It is not worth it if your phone barely rings, or if someone genuinely answers every call already, and we will get to those cases honestly further down.

Do the maths on one missed job

The average tradie callout, clinic appointment or salon booking in New Zealand sits somewhere between $90 and several hundred dollars. Research consistently finds that most callers who hit voicemail do not leave a message; they ring the next name in the search results. So the question is not "can I afford an AI receptionist", it is "how many jobs went to the next Google result last month while I was on the tools, with a client, or asleep".

Talkify is $129/month at the founding rate for your first 3 months, then $199 with 200 minutes of calls included. One saved job a month pays for it in most trades. Everything after that is margin you were previously donating to whoever answers their phone. Run your own numbers in the missed call calculator, which uses your call volume and your average job value, not ours.

What you actually get beyond the answered call

  • Every call answered from 0.4 seconds, 24/7, including the 8am Monday rush when four people ring at once. Software does not have a roster.
  • Bookings made, not messages taken. The agent reads your live calendar and locks the slot in while the caller is on the line, then texts confirmation both ways.
  • Urgent calls reach you. You define what urgent means; the agent texts your mobile within seconds or warm-transfers the call with context.
  • A record of everything. Transcripts, summaries and caller details in your dashboard, so "did anyone ring about the retaining wall" has an answer.

When it is not worth it

Honesty costs us nothing here. If your phone rings twice a week, voicemail is free and you will call back both people. If you run a front desk that genuinely answers every call live during hours and after-hours calls have no value to you, the case is thinner. And if your calls routinely involve complex negotiation that must happen in the first minute, you may want a human on the front line with the AI catching the overflow, which is a setup we run for plenty of businesses. The point of the maths above is that it is your maths: at low volume and low job value, do not buy this, from us or anyone.
